ServSafe Student FAQ’s

  • How do I register for a class?

You may register by filing out the registration form, through the website.

  • Will I get a receipt for the class?

Students who register online will have a confirmation/receipt emailed to them after completing the online registration.  For those who do not register online a receipt will be given out to them the first day of the class.

  • Will this course meet the requirements for my county?

The ServSafe program is approved by all counties in the State of Maryland.

  • How long will it take for my certificate to arrive?

16 business days after you take the test you may check your test results online at the NRAEF.  Your certificate should arrive approximately two weeks after you take the exam.

  • What does it mean when I check my score online and it says there is no record of me?

In most cases this means you are checking too early for your results and your test hasn’t been graded yet.  It could also mean that you entered some information incorrectly.

  • What do I do if my name is spelled incorrectly on my certificate?

If your name is spelled incorrectly and you bubbled your name correctly on your answer sheet, it will be replaced at no cost.  If your name is spelled wrong due to any error on your answer sheet you will be responsible for getting it replaced.  To get a new certificate you need to fill out the Certificate Replacement Form and sent it to the address on the form.  The fee for this is $20.00.

  • What happens if I cannot attend the class I signed up for?

Prepaid registrations are transferable for 90 days from the original class date.  If you cannot attend a class, please contact us 48 hours prior to the class.  Individuals who miss a class without prior notification will not be issued a refund.

  • If I need to recertify can I just attend the second day of a two day class?

No, you may not attend the second day of a two day class.  The material covered on the second day is not the same material that is covered in a recertification class.

  • What do I do if I fail the test?

Information will be sent to you on how to go about retesting two to three weeks after your exam date.

  • What is the signature delivery option?

This is a way for us to track your certificate once it leaves our office and make sure that it gets to you.  In some cases certificates are lost in the mail.  If you did not select the signature delivery option, you will be responsible for getting a duplicate certificate at a cost of $20.00.

  • How long is the certification good for in Maryland?

Three years in all counties in Maryland.

  •  But my certificate says it is good for five years!

Although some jurisdictions in the US accept the certification for five years, Maryland counties only accept it for three years.

  • How long after my certification expires can I still take the recertification course?

You have up to 90 days after the three year expiration date to get it renewed.  We recommend that you take the 2-day class if your certification has been expired for longer than 90 days.

  • I've received my certification and want to become an instructor.  What do I do next?

Apply for certified instructor status by completing advanced online testing and tutorials at www.ServSafe.com.  There is no additional charge to apply for Instructor Status.  Additionally, many trainers find the Train the Trainer Workshop offered by MHEF to be helpful as you start to teach ServSafe.

To become an instructor for MHEF, you will need to complete the ServSafe Train-the-Trainer course.  Click here for more information.
