Pre-Shift Checklist

Document Actions

Managers and your employees aren't always on exactly the same page an any moment during a busy shift. The front-of-the-house manager can go a long way to ensuring shift success by developing a pre-shift checklist that includes the following:

  1. Be ready to react to staffing issues quickly and effectively.
  2. Set up the Section chart.
  3. Stock all printers with ribbons and plenty of paper. Check to see each printer is working properly.
  4. Test all POS terminals to ensure they are working properly.
  5. Do a hands-on walk through of every wait station to ensure that it is properly set up and stocked.
  6. Is the house in order and clean? 7. Cover any low stock or sold-out items with the wait staff and offer suggestions for each .
  7. Inform staff of any product, procedural or staffing changes.
  8. Discuss any "surprises" or predictions. Generally, staff likes routine so be careful to keep them informed of anything you anticipate could happen during the shift, i.e., an important convention is in town, a sporting or other event occuring nearby will end in the middle of their shift, etc.
  9. Pay attention to the details; they make the big difference.
