What is a "Prix Fixe" menu?
What is a "prix fixe" menu?
A Prix Fixe (pronounced PREE-fix) menu is a multi-course meal that's offered at a fixed price.
It usually contains at least three courses, but may have as many as a dozen or more. Guests are generally given two or three options for each course and, regardless of what they choose, the price remains the same.
- Because the size of diners' appetites can vary, many restaurants will offer several different Prix Fixeoptions
- for example, 3-, 5- and 7-course meals.
Sometimes, wines will also be matched with each course and prices are quoted either with or without the accompanying wines.
A similar type of menu is the Table d'Hote (TAHB-luh-dote). This is also a multi-course, fixed price meal, but the cost is based on the price of the main course. For example, a 5-course meal with chicken as the entrée may be priced at $50, while the same meal with lobster might be $80.
Prix Fixe and Table d'Hote meals are often a better value than ordering several courses separately.
