Decision Making- Mistakes to Avoid

Document Actions
Make sure your decisions don't misfire:

- Don't overrely on experts. Consulting just one source-what the experts say-ignores the fact that they, too, sometimes are wrong. It's safer to seek information from several sources.

- Don't overestimate the value of others' opinions because you think they know more than you do. Avoid that by testing what they say against your answers to these questions: "Have they experienced this kind of problem?" "Do they really know as much about it as I do?" "Do we share the same values?"

- Don't underestimate the value of others' opinions. Ignoring advice can be just as bad as accepting it without question.

- Don't undermine the facts with expectations or biases you don't even know you have. You fall into this trap when you tend to hear and see only what you want to. To avoid it, admit to yourself that you may be inclined to think a certain way and vow to stay open to other views.

- Don't undervalue your instincts. When your brain overloads on information, pay attention to what your body tells you. Quite often, your intuition will help you make the right decision.
