Wines of Burgundy, France - Four Categories

Document Actions

There are four overall categories of Burgundy wine, with prices ranging from the very affordable to the very extravagant. It's helpful to think of these categories as levels of a pyramid, with each ascending level representing a greater sophistication in taste and bouquet and smaller quantities produced.

First Level: Regional Wines

This refers to any wine whose grapes come from the A.O.C. defined Burgundy region. You will see the words "Appellation Bourgogne Controlee" on the label. As affordable, everyday drinking wines, they are a great value.

Second Level: Village Wines
The next level up refers to a specific village's vineyards, like Pommard, Meursault or Pouilly-Fuisse. On the label, you'll see something like "Appellation Mercurey Controlee." Because it is a more specific designation, fewer wines can claim this category. As these wines are more complex, they pair better with more complex foods.

Third Level: Premier Cru Wines
Going up to the next level, we come to Premier Cru or First Growth, which refers to a particular vineyard within a village. Just look for the words: "Premier cru" on the label. Given the high level of excellence demanded, very few vineyards have been designated as Premier Cru. These wines can be the focal point of a meal or occasion.

Fourthe Level: Grand Cru Wines
The highest level, the capstone of the pyramid, is the Grant Cru or Great Growth. These wines represent a tiny subset of all vineyards and are considered Burgundy's finest. When you want to treat yourself or your guests to something truly special or you want to leave a lasting impression, choose Grand Cru.
